Pharmacological action:

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and blocking the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the acceptor site on the mRNA-ribosome complex, which prevents the addition of amino acids to the growing peptide chain. It also inhibits the initiation and elongation steps of protein synthesis. It has a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as against atypical bacteria, such as chlamydia and mycoplasma.

Doxycycline is well-absorbed after oral administration and has a long half-life in the body, allowing for less frequent dosing. It is widely distributed throughout the body and can penetrate many tissues, including bone and teeth.

Indications:

Doxycycline is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in animals, including respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and tick-borne diseases. It is also used for the prevention and treatment of anthrax, as well as for the treatment of certain protozoal infections, such as Toxoplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis.

Doxycycline is particularly useful in the treatment of tick-borne infections, such as Lyme disease, due to its ability to penetrate tissues and reach high concentrations in the skin and other tissues. It is also commonly used in the treatment of Mycoplasma and Chlamydia infections.

Precautions:

Doxycycline should not be given to young animals with developing teeth, as it can cause permanent discoloration of the teeth. It should also be used with caution in animals with liver or kidney disease, as it is primarily excreted through these organs. Doxycycline may also cause gastrointestinal upset in some animals, and should be given with food to minimize this effect.
